Brake Service in Allen, TX
Problems With Your Brake System?
The brake repair experts at EBA want to educate you about your automobile’s braking system. While brakes are a relatively simple system on your car, they are a safety item and should be inspected regularly. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, be sure and have your mechanic check them out, you may need brake repair service:
- Unusual noises when stopping, such as squealing or grinding
- Shaking or vibrating while stopping, especially the pedal or steering wheel
- Pulling or grabbing to the left or right while braking
- Pedal goes lower than normal when pressed
- Pedal requires more pressure than usual
Brake System Components
The system is made up of disc brakes in the front, either disc brakes or drum brakes in the rear, and the hydraulics. Most new cars are also equipped with an ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) as an added safety feature.
Front discs (also called brake rotors) and pads are the most common wear parts and are generally replaced more frequently. However, the whole system should be checked at the same time. Front and rear brake pads and shoes are easily replaced, and worn rotors and drums can sometimes be resurfaced, but oftentimes should just be replaced.
The hydraulic system includes the master cylinder and brake booster, the hydraulic lines, and the calipers (disc brakes) or wheel cylinders (drum brakes). Brake fluid is hydroscopic, meaning that it attracts water, which is definitely bad for your brakes. In addition to causing rust, water in your lines can easily boil when heated (rest assured, brakes can get pretty hot), which will make your pedal go soft, increase braking distances, and possibly lead to an accident. Therefore, we highly recommend changing the brake fluid in your car every two years as routine maintenance. While most people neglect doing this, it will greatly improve the longevity of your braking system, reduce overall repair frequency, and increase your safety.
The ABS system is comprised of electronic controllers, sensors, and valves which keep the brakes from locking up in an emergency situation and allow maximum braking as well as maintaining steering control. ABS is definitely one of the most important and innovative improvements in technology in recent years.
Brake Repair or Replacement
At EBA, our technicians are experts at maintaining, diagnosing and repairing your brakes to keep you safely on the road. Some parts can be repaired, while others need to be replaced; we know the difference. There are also times when the choice may be an economic one, but we will always give you the options and let you decide what is best for your wallet rather than choosing for you whatever is best for our wallet.
We do recommend that you bring your car in for an inspection at the first sign of any strange noise or unusual operation, we’ll give you a free inspection. Problems that are caught early on may be small repairs, compared to ignoring the symptoms, which can lead to much greater costs. For example, sometimes worn brake pads are designed to squeal as a warning that they are worn. Simple replacement of the pads may be all that’s needed. However, if you let it go too long, the pads can wear down completely and damage the rotors, which will then require more costly brake repairs.
